Operation Information : Snowball's Chance Episode 2
Hey there.  Here's some stuff I'm willing to share on the new game.
Here's some stage layout stuff.  After I worked out the over
arcing story stuff, I come up with the major stage node layout.  I
have certain major obstacles assigned for each area, for
example in A. the player is attacked by the sun and given small
tutorials on the way through the area.  J. has the player dealing
with water hazards, K. has many pitfalls and darkness.
Here are some more detailed roughs of individual areas.

I usually have these open in photoshop, and use the grid
overlays to plot out the tiles for the stage.  You'll see how
Area A has turned out so far a bit down the page.
Game Layout
I haven't mentioned how the game controls were designed
yet, that's because I had them done in Episode 1.  I was
impressed with how they felt and thought an adventure game
would fit well with it.
Character Stuff
Some character design.  I've written their dialogue and interactions up until Crab Town.  
I apologize for the copyright all over my art, gotta cover me arse!  Click on the images
to see some rough design for the characters.
I always marvel at how all my characters look
normal to me when facing right, but weird
when facing left.  It's fun to imagine that there
is a reeaally bad car accident off the right of
the screen, when looking at them.  Snowball is
WAY to happy, snowball want's
BLOOD!
Hey look!  Some pics of area A, close to finality.  I still have to make the sun entity, it will be shooting the
lazer eyes!  The downed tree will have some smoke and fire on the tip there.  Final lighting is also to be
done.  The snowball lacks a face or finished body, I use a lot of place holders until they're ready for the art.
 that snowball was from the graphical overhaul of SbCEpisode 1.  Actually, the whole opening tileset here,
minus the water, tree, tree trunk, sign, fence, craggle skull(monster from E1), and cave entrance, are from
the graphics overhaul in E1.

A Bit on Snowball Animation
Here's a few samples of the player character's animation.
This is just an idle animation set.  Here the snowball is just sort of meh.  This is
just the raw art slapped together, in game the body and face are separate, so
as to pull off additional squash/stretch effects, and to handle the individual
frames to specific timing.  For instance, that bit where he opens his mouth
wide is actually a yawn, which looks horrid here.  In game the frames are held,  
repeated, and stretched over a longer period of time.
YEOUCH!  Here are some stills of various "in pain" poses.  The same as
above, in game a random frame is chosen when the player takes damage,
and is held as the body pulsates rapidly.
Awww, snowball is scared out of his chilly mind.
And of course, all of these are drawn for 7 southerly facing directions.  The
snowball body actually flips in game depending on which direction the player
is facing, so the little hair dealies are on the other side when facing away from
the player.

Maptastic!
Here's a portion of the game all tiled out.  There will still be some finalization required on some of it,
namely set pieces, events, and actual entities.  Anyhow, click on the little segments to get a blown up
shot of it.  Forgive me for any seams or strange happenings in some of them, I'm not lining up rooms
larger than a screen to be pixel perfect.

The Sun is a jerk
The Sun, melting snow since infinity.
Simply put.  Basically the Sun will harass you when
outdoors, reveling in the prospect of melting down some
poor Snowball before his/her time.  You'll get a visual hint
in the form of the
Sun's hot mug filling your screen, then
his
beam of doom will shoot down in any number of ways
looking to put the hurts on you.  The face he makes
before the blast will lend some insight into how his attack
will behave.
